Who would have thought that a country of approximately 3.3 million, churns out the highest number of books annually, more than any other country in the world. In Iceland, new books are usually published during the Christmas season.

A copy of the bókatíðindi, which lists approximately 90% of the titles that have been published in the year, is mailed to every household in the country, free of charge. This phenomenon is referred to as the jolabokafloo – Christmas book flood.
