TS: “Your bio says: “Scuba diving in Papua New Guinea, racing Lamborghinis in Italy, volcano boarding in Nicaragua – it’s all in a day’s work.” Some of these require specific skills; do you spend time training for them or just plunge right in?”

RE: “I’ve always thought: if I can do it, anyone can do it. I fell into travel writing by accident, and was never particularly adventurous. Just about everything I do is a first time experience, although I did have to get my scuba certification in Papua New Guinea (which is kind of like learning to play golf in St Andrews). It’s been my great fortune to do a great many things, but to never get particularly good at any one thing.”
